 > COBOL II (Hardcover)
This book is a must for COBOL programmers who have used VS COBOL, basic COBOL II, or COBOL II Release 2 and would like to learn more about COBOL II including Release 3. Harvey Bookman (Author)
 > Compiling VS COBOL II programs
It contains key compiler options for VS COBOL II programs. The Enterprise COBOL and VS COBOL II compilers are similar. If you will be using the same compiler options that are specified in your current VS COBOL II applications.
 > Considerations for VS COBOL II Programs
Language Environment® provides support for the execution of programs compiled by the VS COBOL II compiler. The native runtime library for this compiler is not supported. For detailed information on migrating VS COBOL II programs to Language Environment support, see the Enterprise COBOL for z/OS®: Compiler and Run-Time Migration Guide.
 > HP COBOL II/XL Reference Manual
Hewlett-Packard's COBOL II is based on ANSI COBOL as specified in the American[REV BEG] National Standard Programming Language COBOL (ANSI X3.23a-1989).
 > Support for VS COBOL II
In CICS Transaction Server for z/OS, Version 3 Release 1, applications compiled with a VS COBOL II compiler execute using the Language Environment runtime library routines. The native runtime library provided with VS COBOL II is not supported.
 > VS COBOL II A Guide for Programmers and Managers, Second Edition
This book is a VS COBOL II guide for programmers and managers. Anne Prince (Author)
 > VS COBOL II Application Programming Guide
This manual helps you to create VS COBOL II programs; analyze and modify existing COBOL programs; and compile, link-edit, and execute VS COBOL II programs under MVS or CMS.
 > VS COBOL II Application Programming Language Reference

 > VS COBOL II Grammar Version 1.0.4
This grammar has been been recovered from IBM's VS COBOL II Reference Summary (Document Number: SX26-3721-05) in a semi-automatic, formal process. The VS COBOL II grammar should be regarded as a specification (of context-free syntax + lexical syntax) rather than a realistic parser + scanner description.
 > VS COBOL II: Highlights and Techniques (Paperback)
This book shows you why IBM released VS COBOL II. It will also show you how to put VS COBOL II to work. James G. Janossy (Author)

COBOL II Forums, FAQs, Blogs

 > Can different COBOL versions work under z/OS if COBOL II is in linklist instead of LE/MVS?
Is your statement that OS/VS COBOL, COBOL II, and OS/390 COBOL working under z/OS 1.3 true even if LE/MVS is not in the linklist and COBOL II is in the linklist instead?
 > Can you not call a COBOL II (not Linked LE) from a COBOL OS/390 LE?
We are running CICS TS1.3. Most of our applications are COBOL II RMODE/AMODE 24. I have a program compiled OS/390 LE that calls a COBOL II AMODE 31.
 > COBOL II and VS COBOL
I heard that COBOL II and VS COBOL programs will not work correctly under COBOL on OS/390. Programs that were compiled using the OS/VS COBOL and VS COBOL II compilers are still supported by IBM service if they are running under Language Environment. The compilers are not supported, and neither are the OS/VS COBOL run-time library or the VS COBOL II run-time library, but the output of the compilers is still supported if a run-time migration to LE has been completed.
 > COBOL OS/VS and VS II conversion documentation
Now we have to migrate the source code from OS/VS Cobol to Enterprise COBOL and also COBOL II to Enterprise COBOL. The COBOL Migration Guide has everything you need to know to convert from OS/VS COBOL to Enterprise COBOL.
 > COBOL 85 vs. VS COBOL II
What is difference between COBOL 85 and VS COBOL II? Shall I use VS COBOL II for microcomputer applications? VS COBOL II is for IBM Mainframe programs only.
 > Continuing to use VS COBOL II
Can we recompile VS-COBOL-II programs on z/OS using existing VS-COBOL-II compiler with our current DB2 and CICS TS for bug fixing purposes? If you are running your VS COBOL II programs under the VS COBOL II run-time library, then you are at risk today.
 > Conversion for COBOL to COBOL-II Programs
This is a COBOL II email list.
 > Converting COBOL/VS and COBOL II to COBOL/390 LE
What does it take to convert from COBOL/VS and COBOL II to COBOL/390 LE? VS COBOL II programs do not have to be converted unless they were compiled with the CMPR2 option in which case they need CCCA also. VS COBOL II programs that were compiled with NOCMPR2 will compile without change under Enterprise COBOL V3.
 > Difference Between COBOL, VS-COBOL-II and MFCOBOL
VS COBOL II was replaced with COBOL for MVS & VM (5688-197), then COBOL for OS/390 & VM (5648-A25) and the current version of COBOL is called Enterprise COBOL for z/OS & OS/390 (5655-G53).
 > Difference between COBOL II and COBOL LE?
What is the difference between COBOL II and COBOL LE? VS COBOL II was the first 85 Std compiler from IBM.
 > Help with a BAL program that calls a COBOL II program repetitively
I have a BAL program that calls a COBOL II program repetitively. Your structure would then be CBLSTUB calls ASM which calls VS COBOL II program repeatedly.
 > How to convert a VS COBOL II program to COBOL OS/390
Which changes I need to do to convert a VS COBOL II program to COBOL for OS/390 program? If you use the same compiler options you should not have to make any changes.
 > How to go from VS COBOL II to COBOL for OS/390 and VM
Do I need to make code changes in order to convert VS COBOL II programs to IBM COBOL for OS/390 and VM? You DO need to do a run-time migration, to run your VS COBOL II programs under the new COBOL run-time library which is Language Environment.
 > How to tell if a program is VS COBOL II or Enterprise COBOL
I want to find out whether a program is a COBOL II version or a COBOL III version. For VS COBOL II, you would have to look at your hard copy version of the Application Programming Debugging manual to find out how to identify the compiler, version and release number from the object program. In brief, for VS COBOL II the eyecatcher is at offset x'D' (13) into the program, and looks like "C2" (space, C2, space) followed by V.R.M at offset x'11 (17), something like "1.4.0".
 > Is a syntax for COBOL II compatible with OS/390?
The COBOL for OS/390 & VM compiler is very compatible with the VS COBOL II compiler. Unlike the switch from OS/VS COBOL to VS COBOL II, where we completely re-wrote the compiler from scratch, COBOL for OS/390 & VM is built on a VS COBOL II base.
 > Mainframe Gurukul - COBOL II / COBOL 370
A COBOL II / COBOL 370 forum.
 > Problems after converting VS COBOLII DB2 to Enterprise COBOL DB2 program
We converted a VS COBOLII DB2 program to Enterprise COBOL and it appears that the results set from the cursor is not in the sequence it used to be in before the conversion?
 > Problems with compiling a COBOL II/CICS module
A programmer was compiling a COBOL II/CICS module using the COBOL for MVS compiler. You might have used QUOTE under VS COBOL II then APOST under COBOL for MVS and VM.
 > Similarities and differences between COBOL II and COBOL 390
Both VS COBOL II and COBOL for OS/390 & VM share a common code base, so all of the COBOL language that is supported by both compilers is supported with compatible results.
 > The end for VS COBOL II support
We have the VS COBOL II and the COBOL FOR MVS&VM compilers in house. When will IBM be shutting down support (or enhancements) for VS COBOL II? VS COBOL II went out of service in March, 2001.
 > Third party products, COBOL II and LE problems
We are running a product (third party) that does not work correctly with LE. Now part of our software is running with LE the rest with COBOL II runtime library. We also use two copilers (COBOL II and COBOL for OS/390). The only problem with running the VS COBOL II run-time library under OS/390 2.10 is the same as running it under any release of OS/390: The VS COBOL II run-time library is not supported by IBM at all.
 > Unsupported OS/COBOL and COBOL II today with CICS version 4.1.
Programs compiled by OS/VS COBOL and VS COBOL II are fully service supported by IBM when run on the Language Environment run-time library.
 > VS COBOL II Application Programming Guide
This manual helps you to create VS COBOL II programs; analyze and modify existing COBOL programs; and compile, link-edit, and execute VS COBOL II programs under MVS or CMS.
 > VS COBOL II Application Programming Language Reference
This reference presents the syntax of VS COBOL II statements and the rules for writing source programs that are to be compiled by the VS COBOL II compiler. It is meant to be used as a reference in conjunction with VS COBOL II Application Programming Guide for MVS and CMS or VS COBOL II Application Programming Guide for VSE.
 > VS COBOL II call Enterprise COBOL
Can VS COBOL II programs perform STATIC CALLs to Enterprise COBOL programs? Yes, static or dynamic as long as everything is running under LE. First, get the VS COBOL II running under LE then add a call from any VS COBOL II program to any Enterprise COBOL program.
 > What Are The Differences Between COBOL and COBOL II?
There are at least five differences: COBOL II supports structured programming by using in line PERFORMs and explicit scope terminators, it introduces new features (EVALUATE, SET .. TO TRUE, CALL .. BY CONTEXT, etc), it permits programs to be loaded and addressed above the 16 megabyte line, it does not support many old features (READY TRACE, REPORT-WRITER, ISAM, etc.), and it offers enhanced CICS support.
 > Why convert VS COBOL and COBOL II programs to Enterprise COBOL?
We are converting to z/OS and have seen articles and been told that our VS Cobol and COBOL II programs will work without recompiles, relinks, etc. For example, if you upgrade your z/OS and COBOL breaks, if you are running your modules under the OS/VS COBOL or VS COBOL II run-time libraries, then IBM will not help you, you are down and all alone.
