| RE: READ INTO
Message: Neither one is possible.
You do not read a file into a file.
You may read a file into a record.
READ (with no other clauses) is for flat files.
READ NEXT is for indexed files, such as ISAM.
READ NEXT says that even tho the file is indexed, you do not want to use the key to read a selected record, but rather you just want the next record in the file at the current record pointer (cursor) position.

| RE: READ INTO
Message: DO U MEAN TO SAY THAT THE CURRENT RECORD POINTER POSITION IS THE LAST READ ERCORD OR THE NEXT RECORD FROM THE LAST ONE THAT YOU JUST HAVE READ...LETS SAY:
U HAVE NUMBER1 AND YOU SEARCH FOR NUMBER 1 IN THE LOOKUP FILE..THEN U FOUND THE NUMBER 1 IN THE LOOKUP..SO YOU WILL NOW LOOK AT NUMBER2 IN THE LOOKUP FILE..WHERE WILL I START SEARCHING..AT THE LAST RECORD READ (WHICH IS THE NUMBER1) OR THE NEXT RECORD IN THE LOOKUP FILE(AFTER THE NUMBER1)..
PLEASE HELP ME UNDERSTAND THIS..THANKS

| RE: READ INTO
Message: Hi.
These are records with the following keys:
Number 0001
Number 0002
number 0003
.
.
.
.
.
Number 1999
Assume that the file is defined as TEST-FILE.
If the key is defined as TEST-KEY then you would move the key for the record you want to access to TEST-KEY and then read the file.
eg. MOVE "Number 0002" TO TEST-KEY.
READ TEST-FILE KEY IS TEST-KEY.
.
.
.
The record pointer (file location) is pointing to the record with the key 'Number 0002'.
If you used the read NEXT option you will get the record with key 'Number 0003' and if you used the read PREVIOUS option you will get the record with key 'Number 0001'.
Hope this helps you understand.
Regards
James
