Subject: Move from IBM Mainframe to PC

Message:
I run an annual project on an IBM 4341 mainframe
using DOS/VSE and, of course, COBOL. Yeah, I know
it is old, but I have been doing it for ages and the price
is right ;o) That system is going away, and I want to
move processing to a PC (preferably Windows
environment). Price is a consideration, but not the
primary one (within reason).

All processing is in batch mode using sequential files
(managed by VSAM). I have no desire to change that
approach. Input files come from a UniSys system via
tape and must be converted to IBM format (by called
modules coded in Assembler). EBCDIC based
processing is important. The system of programs
makes regular use of called modules (both COBOL and
Assembler). I believe I can simulate the Assembler
modules in COBOL if needed. Extensive use is made
of Copy Books.

I have reasonable programming experience, although I
do not do it for a living. I have experience with
OS/MVS environments from many years ago.

What product(s) would you recommend? I am looking
for a compiler, editor, external sort (if possible) and a
utility for Hex file dumps (similar to DITTO). An
Assembler would be helpful. The ability to link
modules is critical. Debugging features will obviously
be important. A facility to simulate JCL through
something like batch files would be helpful. The
capability to print 132 character wide reports (on letter
size paper on a Laser Printer) is also a must.

My research shows many products that work
cross-platform, integrate with web-based servers,
convert code to Java and such. No need for all that
fancy stuff. Just a plain simple approach. Hey, look at
the environment where I have been processing ;o)

Regards,
Milt

Take a look at Micro Focus's Mainframe Express product. It simulates an EBCDIC environment on the PC. It compiles, links, runs with assembly, JCL, DB2 and others. This product is part of their "Lift and Shift" stratagy.
