Subject: Abt Cobol Load Module
Message: Hi All,
The question might be silly but it is important for me.
Is it possible to re create a COBOL program from a load module?
In detail:
I was having only load module in my load library and lost the source code as well as compile listing.
Pleae help me out to find any tool that will do me favour...
Thanks in advance

| RE: Abt Cobol Load Module
Message: Yes,
that is possible for simple programs, but is considered a difficult task. The topic is named decompilation or reverse engineering.
In theory it is called transformation of "goto programs" to "while programs", but theory is not enough, because you will also have to know the static and the dynamic runtime library.
If it was a business case, there were lots of tools for it...

| RE: Abt Cobol Load Module
Message: I don't know of any software to do this that is free. These packages cost many thousands of dollars. They were used a lot around Y2K, when lost source for important production programs had to be recovered. Unless this is a critical production program, it's not likely to be worth the cost.*
Even so, the recovered (recreated) program will not be very friendly. For example, field names and paragraph names will not be meaningful.
*Sometimes the owners of these recovery packages will offer a free 'sample' use of their package, if they think you are a big customer interested in purchasing it. If you can fool them into that, you might be able to get access to such a package for free.
